Update on the Strategic Plan People Priority To the Johns Hopkins Medicine community Dear Colleagues, For Johns Hopkins Medicine, the blizzard of 2016 was a great reminder of how readily our people band together to help our patients, our community and each other. These acts of commitment and compassion remind us why the people priority is the most important component of our Strategic Plan. We would like to share an update on the institution's efforts to—in the words of the plan—"attract, engage, develop and retain the world's best people." Diversity and Inclusion We are conducting formal nationwide searches for all leadership positions to make sure we have a slate of candidates that is diverse across several dimensions, including ethnicity, race and gender. To ensure a fair and objective interview process, we now require all of our search committee members to take training in unconscious bias. We also continue to work toward our goal to increase the number of women and underrepresented minorities in top leadership positions by considering diversity and inclusion in our advancement decisions.Employee Development We expect that SuccessFactors will be fully implemented across Johns Hopkins Medicine by summer. The organizations that are currently using the SuccessFactors myPerformance online job evaluation system are conducting midyear reviews and will perform annual reviews from July through October. Ultimately, we believe this review system will be a more streamlined, collaborative process that will improve our professional development. Our leaders also benefit from formal feedback, so we are piloting a 360-degree evaluation process for 13 entity presidents and vice presidents. We solicited feedback from people who worked with these individuals and also asked the leaders to self-evaluate. We are reviewing the results and will look at how to more effectively support our leaders in their professional development goals and workforce needs. Health and Wellness With heart disease, stroke and other chronic diseases taking an enormous toll on Americans, and the cost of medical care for these conditions skyrocketing, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is encouraging all employers to submit a Worksite Health ScoreCard. We fully support this initiative, which enables the organization to assess its strategies and interventions around prevention of chronic diseases for employees. We are pleased to say that all of our member organizations have completed the first step in the process—a 125-question survey covering topics including nutrition, stress, weight management and strategies to support a healthy workforce. The results will help us establish benchmarks, track improvements and set sustainable wellness goals for 2017 as we continue to expand the Healthy@Hopkins program. Clinical Recognition This fall, we hosted a special awards program to recognize physicians and clinical care teams for excellence in quality, safety and care; innovation and professionalism; and collaboration and teamwork. We honored more than 42 recipients from our hospitals and Johns Hopkins Community Physicians for their extraordinary contributions. We look forward to again acknowledging the fine work of our clinicians, as nominations will open this spring for the next round of clinical awards. Our faculty, staff and trainees carry out their impactful work in research, patient care and education without fanfare. We encourage you to take a moment to thank them for their achievements. We are very proud of our people and hope that each of you recognizes the impact of your contributions. Please remember to share your thoughts with us at strategic_plan@jhmi.edu.
