Redonda Miller Named President of The Johns Hopkins Hospital

Dear Colleagues,

It is with an enormous sense of pride today that I announce my successor as president of The Johns Hopkins Hospital. Our own Redonda Miller, M.D., M.B.A., will assume the role on July 1. Dr. Miller will become the hospital’s 11th president and the first woman to hold the post in our more than 125-year history.

After conducting an extensive national search co-led by Dr. Rothman and me, we have decided that Dr. Miller is the best candidate to succeed me as head of The Johns Hopkins Hospital.

Over the next few years, we contemplate the need for the next president to oversee significant patient care redesign within the hospital and our outpatient clinics, and the introduction of precision medicine centers of excellence, for which the hospital will serve as the living laboratory.

Redonda’s extraordinary combination of exceptional medical prowess, years of progressive administrative experience, and the well-earned respect of senior clinical and administrative leadership will serve us well. Her deep understanding and appreciation of The Johns Hopkins Hospital’s culture and working knowledge of the Maryland financial rate-setting system make her extremely well-suited to lead at this time in our history.

With more than 20 years of service at Johns Hopkins, Redonda most recently served as the senior vice president of medical affairs for the Johns Hopkins Health System and vice president of medical affairs for The Johns Hopkins Hospital. In the latter role, she was responsible for medical staff administration, pharmacy, health information management, hospital epidemiology and infection control, spiritual care and chaplaincy, and patient safety. Redonda has proven herself to be a rigorously effective, inspiring and, by all accounts, high-energy leader with a gift for unifying disparate groups to achieve the institution’s aims.

Redonda first came to Johns Hopkins as a medical student and completed her internship and residency in internal medicine at The Johns Hopkins Hospital. She served as an assistant chief of service in 1996 and the following year joined the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine faculty as an assistant professor of medicine. She began distinguishing herself as a collaborator, with great success in developing councils and committees as an effective way to bring people and ideas together, particularly to address challenges and solve problems. Redonda earned her M.B.A. from the Johns Hopkins University School of Professional Studies in Business and Education in 2004. In 2006, she was promoted to associate professor.

During her tenure, Redonda has served in a number of positions, including as associate program director of the Osler Medical Residency Training Program, assistant dean for student affairs for the school of medicine and vice chair of clinical operations for the Department of Medicine. I will remain the executive vice president of Johns Hopkins Medicine and president of the Johns Hopkins Health System. In that role, I will take the opportunity to mentor Redonda as the new president of The Johns Hopkins Hospital.

In unison with our faculty members, physicians, nurses and staff members, and in collaboration with our other hospital presidents and senior leaders, Redonda will surely help propel Johns Hopkins Medicine and our historic Johns Hopkins Hospital into a profoundly bright future to better serve our mission, our patients and our community. Please join me in congratulating her on her new appointment and in thanking her for her unprecedented service to Johns Hopkins.
