President Daniels' Appointment Extended Through June 2024 Dear Faculty, Students, and Staff: Johns Hopkins has always been an extraordinary institution, and the trajectory of our great university has lifted ever higher in recent years. This progress is the result of the work of every member of our community and of the leadership of our 14th president, Ronald J. Daniels. As we look forward, the University Board of Trustees is eager to take steps to ensure that we continue along this impressive path. I am therefore delighted to share the news that the Board of Trustees voted last week to extend President Daniels' appointment for an additional five years, through June 2024. Two years ago, when we announced President Daniels' second five-year term, we expressed appreciation for his vision, which has challenged and emboldened us, unleashing our energy and creativity. We commended his progress toward the goals outlined in his inaugural address, which became the foundation of the Ten by Twenty. This strategic vision has helped us connect our departments and divisions as one university; foster the individual excellence of our students, faculty, and staff; express our commitment to the communities of which we are a part; and undergird the strength of Johns Hopkins' core operations and policies. All the while we have advanced our work through the success of our largest-ever campaign, Rising to the Challenge, which enables us to take on the complex challenges of our time. Extending President Daniels' appointment now allows us to deepen our commitments in several key areas. We are halfway through the recruitment of the first cadre of Bloomberg Distinguished Professors, 50 outstanding interdisciplinary scholars who build new bridges among our divisions and fuel the excellence of our scholarship. We are in the midst of a comprehensive effort to expand the diversity of our faculty and students with a concomitant focus on excellence, and to ensure our campuses support and benefit from the extraordinary diversity of our community. We are in the process of creating an innovation ecosystem that will foster the entrepreneurial inclinations of our university and support the growth of new startups locally. We are adding influential voices to the critical debates affecting higher education and research institutions, including President Daniels' work on the plight of young investigators and the role of anchor institutions. And, through efforts such as HopkinsLocal or our commitment to city schools, we are adamant in our ongoing dedication to our hometown, Baltimore. The University Board of Trustees looks forward with great anticipation to the next eight years of President Daniels' leadership, and we are grateful to each of you for your continuing commitment to Johns Hopkins. Sincerely, Jeffrey H. Aronson
