James Page Named Interim Vice Provost and Chief Diversity Officer for Johns Hopkins University Dear Faculty, Staff, and Students: I am pleased to announce that James E. Page Jr. has agreed to serve as interim vice provost and chief diversity officer for Johns Hopkins University. This is a new position, created after the departure of Caroline Laguerre-Brown who served in the dual role of vice provost for institutional equity and chief diversity officer. The separation of the function of chief diversity officer from that of vice provost for institutional equity highlights the importance of this role to the university. Given his strong leadership as the current vice president and chief diversity officer at Johns Hopkins Medicine and his long-standing commitment to issues of diversity and inclusion, I am confident that James is the right person to support our diversity efforts until a permanent vice provost and chief diversity officer is appointed. James' interim appointment to the Provost's Office is effective immediately and will extend through the recruitment of a new vice provost. He will continue his position with Johns Hopkins Medicine throughout the interim appointment, and I am excited about the opportunity for increased collaboration on diversity-related initiatives between the university and health system. As interim vice provost and chief diversity officer, James will work closely with leadership in the Provost's Office to advance critical initiatives for the university, including completing the JHU Roadmap on Diversity and Inclusion; advancing the Faculty Diversity Initiative; and continuing a universitywide exchange of ideas on race and diversity through such programs as the JHU Forums on Race in America. Before joining Johns Hopkins in 2014, James served for four years as assistant vice president and chief diversity officer at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, one of the nation's top pediatric medical centers. In this role, he helped create a culture that focused on providing extraordinary care to patients and their families from over 85 countries. In addition, James directed nationwide diversity at DaVita Inc., a 35,000-employee, 1,500-location health care organization, and he spent more than 10 years with Dell Inc. as a leader in its Global Diversity, Global Ethics, Compliance, and Privacy organizations, among other distinguished positions. He served for eight years on the Corporate Advisory Committee for the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation in Washington, D.C. He has an MBA from the University of Texas at Austin. Please join me in thanking James for agreeing to serve the university during this interim period. Sincerely, Robert C. Lieberman
