Dan Smith Named Chief Financial Officer for The Johns Hopkins Hospital and Senior Vice President of Finance for the Johns Hopkins Health System To the Johns Hopkins Medicine community Dear Colleagues, For the past 12 years, Johns Hopkins Medicine has benefited from Daniel Smith's extraordinary leadership as president/CEO of Johns Hopkins Home Care Group. We are excited to announce that Dan has been named vice president of finance and chief financial officer for The Johns Hopkins Hospital. He will also assume shared responsibilities as senior vice president of finance for the Johns Hopkins Health System. In these roles, Dan returns to his original career focus in health care financial management. His relationship with Johns Hopkins began in the 1980s as a health care consultant, where he impressed us with a strong command of complex fiscal matters. We were pleased when Dan officially joined our staff in 1983, when he was tapped to participate on a management team that would successfully transition the troubled Baltimore City Hospitals into a profitable health care facility, which is now Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center. Recognized for insightful business acumen and fiscal expertise, Dan ultimately became senior director of finance at Johns Hopkins Bayview, and in 1995, he was named the health system's senior director of finance for budget and financial analysis, overseeing the budget and business planning process. In addition to these duties, Dan was appointed the chief financial officer for Johns Hopkins Home Care Group in 2001. Three years later, he stepped in as the acting president. In 2005, he became president/CEO, and he maintained his role as chief financial officer until 2009. We appreciate Dan's leadership of Johns Hopkins Home Care Group, which has attained national HomeCare Elite status as an organization of two home health agencies for adult and pediatric patients; home infusion; home medical equipment companies, including a joint venture with Allegheny Health Network; and oversight of nine outpatient pharmacies throughout the health system. Additionally, he oversaw the development of a private-duty nursing and home support services agency, and the development and integration of numerous transitions programs throughout the Johns Hopkins Health System. As new programs were established and operations enhanced during Dan's tenure, the number of employees serving customers and patients increased dramatically, from 250 to over 900. It is no wonder that the organization has achieved top scores for employee engagement, most recently attaining an 87th percentile ranking. All the while, Home Care has maintained positive returns to Johns Hopkins Medicine. We look forward to his wise counsel and assured guidance as we navigate an increasingly challenging financial and health care environment. Please join us in congratulating Dan on this well-deserved appointment. Sincerely, Ronald R. Peterson Ronald J. Werthman
