Dec. 10, 2015: Jonathan Lewin Named Executive Vice President for Health Affairs at Emory University Dear Colleagues, With mixed emotions, we announce that Jonathan Lewin, Martin Donner Professor and director of the Russell H. Morgan Department of Radiology and Radiological Science at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and radiologist-in-chief at The Johns Hopkins Hospital, is leaving to accept a position as executive vice president for health affairs at Emory University. Jon will also serve as executive director for Emory's Woodruff Health Sciences Center, president and CEO of Emory Healthcare, and chair of Emory Healthcare's board of directors. His appointment takes effect Feb. 1, 2016. When we sought leadership to help implement a five-year Strategic Plan across the institution, Jon's record and vision made him a clear choice to serve as co-chair for strategic planning for Johns Hopkins Medicine. Then, two years ago, he was tapped to serve as senior vice president for integrated health care delivery, with the responsibilities of building clinical partnerships and integrating services to enhance our delivery of patient care. Under Jon's direction, the radiology department has earned recognition on several fronts. It has consistently earned above-average employee engagement scores, with many of its managers in the 75th percentile. Earlier this year, the department was recognized with a Minnie award as the nation's best diagnostic radiology residency training program. In addition to his departmental duties, Jon holds appointments as professor of oncology, neurosurgery and biomedical engineering. Before joining Johns Hopkins in 2004 after a year-and-a-half national search, Jon had demonstrated impressive expertise in MRI, neuroradiology and biomedical engineering. He served as director of the Division of Magnetic Resonance Imaging and vice chair for research and academic affairs in the Department of Radiology at Case Western Reserve University and University Hospitals of Cleveland. Jon is a fellow of the International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine and of the American College of Radiology. A committed supporter of the industry, he currently serves as president of the American Roentgen Ray Society, president of the International Society for Strategic Studies in Radiology, president-elect of the Society of Chairs of Academic Radiology Departments, and immediate past president of the Association of University Radiologists and of the Academy of Radiology Research. An internationally recognized pioneer in interventional and intraoperative MRI, Jon has published approximately 200 peer-reviewed scientific manuscripts and more than 60 chapters, reviews, commentaries and other invited papers on a wide range of topics. These include the science and clinical aspects of interventional MRI, head and functional brain imaging, and the imaging of acute stroke. Jon has more than 20 patents for inventions, many of them related to MRI applications, and has been principal or co-principal investigator on more than $10 million in grants from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and other federal and state funding agencies. He has also served on numerous national committees, editorial boards and grant review groups for foundations and NIH. We are also appreciative that Karen Horton, executive vice chair in the radiology department, will assume the role of interim director. Paul B. Rothman, M.D. Ronald R. Peterson |
