Dec. 7, 2015: Advancing Leadership Practice Through Johns Hopkins Leadership Competencies

In the last three years, 12 leadership competencies were developed to provide the means to SELECT, DEVELOP and EVALUATE the right leaders, managers and supervisors, and MANAGE the succession of future leaders:

Acting Strategically

Establishing Relationships

Acting with Integrity

Holding Self and Others Accountable

Communicating Effectively

Inspiring and Motivating Others

Demonstrating Emotional Intelligence

Managing and Championing Change

Developing Talent

Navigating Organizations

Enabling Innovation Through Creativity

Promoting Diversity and Inclusion

The attached two documents define the leadership competencies in great detail.

WHO do they apply to?
These leadership competencies will apply to all who formally have direct reports. This applies to four levels of leadership: supervisor, manager, director/administrator and executive. See the second attachment. Everyone in a leadership position will find:

  1. Expected behaviors for each level
  2. Behavioral event interviewing questions to ask candidates for each competency; to be used when it is especially important to have that competency in the next leader
  3. Development activities and learning opportunities

WHEN do these leadership competencies apply to a leader?
Leadership competencies are in play when a Johns Hopkins organization implements SuccessFactors myPerformance. For Johns Hopkins Hospital and Health System Corporation central departments, it was implemented on July 1, 2015. Our first opportunity to apply leadership competencies is with the January/February 2016 midyear review.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT for Johns Hopkins Hospital and Health System Corporation central departments with the first midyear review in myPerformance?
All in management positions will receive an email this week with a document describing a feature in myPerformance called Writing Assistant. Writing Assistant can be used to help in commenting on employees' performance with core values and leadership competencies. Options available are NEEDS TO IMPROVE, MEETS expectations and EXCEEDS expectations.

For more details, see the manager evaluation section on the SuccessFactors Manager Resources intranet page.
