Provide an Internship for a Baltimore City Teen This Summer Dear Colleagues, A few weeks ago, after witnessing the impact of the unrest in Baltimore City, we engaged in many conversations about the ways Johns Hopkins could support the city and our neighbors. Out of these discussions and your many thoughtful suggestions, we found that employment—specifically, job opportunities and career tracks for youth—was a recurring theme. Since then, we have been working on a plan to expand our existing Summer Jobs Program, which provides city youth exposure to various careers and workplace culture. Through this program, which is in its 21st year, Johns Hopkins has served more than 2,500 students, providing them with work experience and skills that may be used in future jobs. Our program operates in partnership with Baltimore City's summer jobs program, YouthWorks. This year, the city is eager to expand its reach, from serving 5,000 youths to nearly 8,000, and has asked Johns Hopkins to increase our placements by 50 percent. We are committed to meeting this challenge by placing 300 young people in paid internships across Johns Hopkins institutions in Baltimore this summer. These internships will happen in two sessions. We are delighted that the first, which starts later this month, is already at capacity, and thank departments that have stepped forward to work with an intern. But we need more help to achieve our goal. To date, we have 60 slots that remain unfilled for the second session that runs July 27 through Aug. 21. We urge you to identify opportunities within your department where a young person can gain job skills and a meaningful educational and mentoring experience. This program is just one way Johns Hopkins can support the aspirations of our city. We count on you to step forward to host and mentor a Baltimore student this summer. You can sign up today by contacting the Office of Strategic Workforce Planning & Development at jhsjp@jhmi.edu or 443-997-4585. Thank you in advance for providing valuable job skills and training to Baltimore's next generation. Sincerely, Ronald J. Daniels Paul B. Rothman, M.D. Ronald R. Peterson
