Moving Forward in Support of the Baltimore Community Dear Colleagues: As Baltimore continues to move forward, it is heartening to see the many manifestations of the personal and professional commitments the Johns Hopkins Medicine family has to serving our community. The events of last week clearly showed us it is critical to the health of the city and Johns Hopkins Medicine that things do not simply return to the status quo in Baltimore. As the largest employer in Baltimore collectively, The Johns Hopkins University and Johns Hopkins Medicine have a real opportunity to be leaders in helping our neighbors and contributing to the healing of our city. Involving our faculty, staff and trainees in the development and implementation of our efforts to help our community is one way we can ensure our success. Last week, we asked every department to convene meetings that would enable employees to discuss their feelings and offer suggestions about how Johns Hopkins Medicine as a whole can contribute to positive change. On Wednesday, Bonnie Windsor, senior vice president of human resources, provided guidelines to Johns Hopkins Hospital and Health System managers to help them facilitate these conversations and the collection of ideas. We are already beginning to hear that conversations held this week have been encouraging and fruitful. Once ideas generated from these meetings have been collected, we will share highlights along with next steps to develop our course of action. Rebuilding efforts have already begun in the city, and there are many opportunities to volunteer. Maryland Unites, OneBaltimore and the Bloomberg School of Public Health website are just a few of the many resources you can use to connect with volunteer and service opportunities. We will share more resources in the coming weeks. Your continued commitment and partnership will help Johns Hopkins Medicine be even more focused and responsive to our community in a way that makes us all proud. Thank you for all you are doing. Sincerely, Paul B. Rothman, M.D. Ronald R. Peterson |
