Elliot McVeigh Stepping Down as Director of the Department of Biomedical Engineering Dear Colleagues, We are writing to announce that Elliot McVeigh, the Bessie Darling Massey Professor of Biomedical Engineering and director of the department, has decided to step down from his position, effective June 1, 2015. Under Elliot's leadership, the Johns Hopkins biomedical engineering program continues to be the top-ranked biomedical engineering program in the country. Elliot has recruited outstanding young faculty members into the department, who along with the established faculty members are training the next generation of cutting-edge scientists and breaking new ground in biomedical research every day. The development of new translational programs, including the Center for Bioengineering Innovation and Design, the Johns Hopkins-Coulter Translational Partnership, the Translational Tissue Engineering Center and the recently established Center for Image-Guided Neurosurgery, have enhanced our ability to develop future leaders in health care technology innovation, and to support Johns Hopkins researchers and clinicians in developing innovations that have a high potential for clinical impact. When Elliot joined the Johns Hopkins Department of Radiology and Radiological Science in 1988, he expected to stay just one year. Once here, he found a home and began to nurture his passion for integrating medicine and engineering in the pursuit of improving patient care. We found in him a leader who drew upon the considerable strengths and talents of Johns Hopkins' schools of engineering and medicine to produce new knowledge from stellar laboratories and to promote the transfer of that knowledge into clinical practice. We greatly appreciate all that Elliot has contributed to Johns Hopkins. Please join us in thanking him for his dedicated service, leadership and impact. We are developing the transition plan for interim leadership of the department, in anticipation of undertaking a national search for the new director. Sincerely, Paul B. Rothman, M.D. Ed Schlesinger |
