Nov. 10, 2014: Johns Hopkins Medicine Strategic Plan - Diversity and Inclusion

Dear Colleagues,

It is an honor to be an accountable leader for the people priority of the Johns Hopkins Medicine Strategic Plan. Our goal is to attract, engage, develop and retain the world's best people. Our most important strategies are through diversity and inclusion—two very powerful Johns Hopkins Medicine values. Specifically, we aim to create a culture where diversity, inclusion, civility, collegiality and professionalism are championed, valued and exhibited through actions, incentives and accountability. I'd like to take this opportunity to share with you some diversity projects that we are working on.

  • In August, we introduced you to James Page, our new vice president for diversity and inclusion. In this newly created position, Mr. Page will collaborate with stakeholders and leaders across the system to lead our ongoing efforts to create and maintain a diverse and inclusive environment. He will also provide culturally competent patient care, strengthen leadership accountability for diversity and ensure alignment of our diversity efforts with the Strategic Plan.
  • The Johns Hopkins Health System's Department of Human Resources has hired a diversity recruitment specialist, Michelle Plummer. She will assist in our continued search for qualified minority individuals, including those with disabilities.
  • At Johns Hopkins, we want to open our doors and create a welcoming workplace for individuals with disabilities. In a few weeks, you will be asked to participate in a survey to ensure that we are compliant with new federal regulations regarding hiring and employing individuals with disabilities. When you get the invitation, we encourage you to participate.
  • Later this year, we will ask staff members to update their veteran status in SAP Employee Self-Service. Having access to accurate data within SAP helps us target communications to this valuable group of employees.

Please visit our diversity website for more information about diversity happenings, including our affinity groups and how to get involved.

I hope you find these new diversity projects exciting and to continue to help make Johns Hopkins Medicine a great place to work for all employees.

Pamela Paulk
Sr. Vice President, Human Resources
