Advancing Biomedical Research at Johns Hopkins To the Johns Hopkins Medicine community Dear Colleagues, As we move into the second year of our five-year Johns Hopkins Medicine Strategic Plan, we'd like to share the additional progress we have made on our strategic priority to advance biomedical research. Part of our mission is to push the boundaries of discovery and create hope for humanity. We believe we're making strides—through new structures, systems and direct research support. The Research Council, which was established to oversee our research strategy, issued a request for grant applications in April for new, innovative projects led by Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine faculty members. The response was extraordinary. In less than two months, we received 174 applications on proposals that ranged from addressing medication regimen complexity in skilled home health care to the mechanisms of action of the anti-tuberculosis agent pyrazinamide. After extensive peer review by members of our faculty, we are pleased to report that starting this month, we will fund 16 awards that represent the breadth of the scientific continuum, with each project receiving approximately $100,000 for one year. These projects will involve extensive collaboration between school of medicine departments and Johns Hopkins University schools. You can read about the deserving recipients and their initiatives at http://ictrweb.johnshopkins.edu/ictr/connection/som_synergy_award.cfm. Thank for doing your part to help Johns Hopkins Medicine become an exemplary model for research across the globe. Sincerely, President The Johns Hopkins Hospital and Health System EVP, Johns Hopkins Medicine |
