Announcing the Departure of J. Brooks Jackson To the Johns Hopkins Medicine community Dear Colleagues, It is with regret as well as pride that we announce that J. Brooks Jackson, Baxley Professor and director of the Department of Pathology, is leaving Johns Hopkins Medicine to become the medical school dean and vice president for health sciences at the University of Minnesota. Brooks—an expert in HIV prevention, detection and treatment—has overseen Pathology since September 2001, after serving as interim director for a year. Under his leadership, the department achieved and maintained a first-place ranking in NIH funding, raised significant philanthropic support and improved faculty diversity. Most importantly, his research spawned tremendous advances in reducing HIV transmission from mother to child. He led the largest NIH-funded maternal pediatric HIV clinical trials network in the world. Brooks also displayed his leadership skills as chair of our Professorial Promotions Committee, setting a new standard of excellence in this role. Brooks will return to the University of Minnesota, where he began his career as a pathology resident and assistant professor, effective Feb. 17. We will name an interim director prior to his departure. In the meantime, please join us in thanking him for his outstanding leadership and dedicated service to Johns Hopkins. Sincerely, Ronald R. Peterson |
