Thank you, JHM Veterans To the Johns Hopkins Medicine community Dear Colleagues, As Veterans Day approaches next Monday, Nov. 11, we want to offer sincere thanks to each and every faculty and staff member who served or is serving in the armed forces, or who is an active duty member of the military, National Guard or Reserves, for their commitment and sacrifice on behalf of all Americans. We would also like to express our appreciation to those who have family members who are serving or who have served. This is a fine occasion on which to note the Johns Hopkins Military and Veterans Health Institute (MVHI). Led by retired Major General James Gilman, M.D., the MVHI has the mission of applying the collective resources of Johns Hopkins to solve the health and health care problems of service members, veterans and their families. As executive director of the institute, Jim, who joined us in May, will help build stronger strategic partnerships with the Military Health System and the Veterans Health Administration through initiatives in research, health care, consultation and education. He will aid our researchers as they better understand and navigate the unique complexities of pursuing Department of Defense funding opportunities. His strong leadership and 35 years as a military physician caring for our nation's service members, military retirees and their families will also provide great insights to help clinicians deliver the absolute best care, which veterans and their families deserve. In addition, we would like to encourage you to attend The Johns Hopkins Hospital's annual Veterans Day Commemoration on Nov. 11 at 11 a.m., to honor the many employees who have served in our country's armed services. This year's event—co-sponsored by the Pastoral Care Department and the recently formed Veterans For Hopkins group—will take place at a new location: the Peterson Family Courtyard, between the Zayed Tower and Phipps. The event will also formally kick off the Veterans For Hopkins group, which provides a network connecting veterans who work at Johns Hopkins Medicine member organizations. In the past few months alone, more than 300 faculty and staff members have joined the group. If you would like to learn more or join Veterans For Hopkins, please email veteransforhopkins@jhmi.edu. All staff, patients and visitors are also welcome to attend the ceremony and reception that follows. In the event of inclement weather, the commemoration will be held in Schaffer Auditorium in The Charlotte R. Bloomberg Children's Center. Johns Hopkins Bayview employees will gather in the Labyrinth at 1 p.m. on Nov. 11 for a Veterans Day service. A Veterans For Johns Hopkins Bayview meeting also will be held in Carroll Auditorium on Nov. 12, from 12:30 to 1 p.m. Please be sure to visit the HopkinsHappenings.org website each day next week for a different interactive opportunity to learn and discuss how Johns Hopkins is caring for veterans and how we are connected to the military. Johns Hopkins Medicine and to our nation, please join us in offering our deepest gratitude to our veterans and their families. Paul B. Rothman, M.D. Ronald R. Peterson |
