Dear Colleagues,

As more and more families in central Maryland can no longer afford to remain in their homes, they are turning to cars, shelters and other places to live. A startling 29 percent of adults in homeless families are employed, many of whom are in the minimum-wage workforce. To afford fair-market rent on a two-bedroom apartment, they would have to work 132 hours a week, the equivalent of more than three full-time jobs.

Your gift to the United Way of Central Maryland can help.

In the past five years, the homeless student population has more than doubled in Maryland, putting thousands of young children at risk for lifelong failure. A childhood spent traveling from shelter to shelter leads to poor health and academic performance.

As we launch the annual United Way Campaign at Johns Hopkins Medicine, we encourage you to support the United Way Family Stability Initiative, a program designed to halt the spiral into homelessness experienced by so many low-income children and families. Services offered through the Family Stability Initiative include a homelessness-prevention program, temporary housing options that keep families out of traditional homeless shelters and lessons on how to keep a household budget and build a savings account.   

Although this year's United Way Campaign focuses on work such as the Family Stability Initiative, you may choose where your dollars go. You can donate to the United Way of Central Maryland general fund, select a specific initiative (such as the Family Stability Initiative or the Johns Hopkins Neighborhood Fund) or select a 501(c)(3) charity of your choice. You can even choose a combination of these options. Giving is easy. You can make a lump sum donation or a regularly scheduled payroll deduction. 

Last year, your generosity helped Johns Hopkins Medicine exceed its United Way Campaign goal. You can make it happen again this year by helping us raise more than $1.7 million.
