John Ulatowski to step down as ACCM director, will remain VP and executive medical director of JHI Dear Colleagues, We are writing to announce that John Ulatowski, M.D., Ph.D., M.B.A., has decided to step down as director of the Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine effective July 1, but we are pleased to let you know that he will continue in a full-time role as vice president and executive medical director of Johns Hopkins Medicine International (JHI). Please join us in thanking John for his leadership of one of Johns Hopkins Medicine's largest departments and for his administrative, medical and research contributions here and around the globe. Under his oversight, Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine has emerged as an institutional leader in patient safety, culminating in the founding of the Armstrong Institute. He has facilitated telemedicine initiatives in the adult and pediatric ICUs to improve patient care, and with his support, our faculty members are now viewed as national and international leaders in the field. On John's watch, the program has had unprecedented growth with expansion of the faculty, creation of a new educational platform for the residency, fellowships in all specialties in anesthesia, and growth of the CRNA division. In addition, during John's tenure, ACCM has attracted an extraordinary amount of federal dollars, which has helped expand our efforts in basic science, translational and health service research, and patient safety. His guidance on hospital redesign aimed at improving patient-centered care and cost effectiveness was invaluable during the construction of the Sheikh Zayed Tower and The Charlotte R. Bloomberg Children's Center, and he oversaw ACCM's successful transition to the new patient towers. With Johns Hopkins for 25 years, John first started here in 1988. While completing his residency in neurology at the University of Maryland Hospital (now UMMS), he began a second residency in anesthesiology at Johns Hopkins. He followed this with combined fellowships in neuroanesthesia and neurocritical care. He became co-director, and then interim director, of the neurocritical care unit at The Johns Hopkins Hospital. He later served as clinical vice chairperson in ACCM. In 2003, he was appointed as interim director of the ACCM department. A year later, he became the Mark C. Rogers Professor and director of the department, as well as anesthesiologist-in-chief for The Johns Hopkins Hospital, a position he holds today. We are grateful to John for his many contributions to ACCM and look forward to continued collaboration with him in his leadership role with JHI. Beginning July 1, we have appointed Daniel Nyhan, M.D., as the interim director of the Department of Anesthesiology Critical Care Medicine, and he will serve in that capacity until the next director is appointed to the position. The search committee will be co-chaired by Henry Brem, M.D., and Bill Baumgartner, M.D. Sincerely, Paul B. Rothman, M.D. Ronald R. Peterson
