Announcing Stephen Sisson, New Executive Director, Ambulatory Services

Dear Colleagues,

With great enthusiasm, we would like to announce that Stephen D. Sisson, M.D., F.A.C.P., will assume the position of executive director of ambulatory services for The Johns Hopkins Hospital. Dr. Sisson will lead the executive operations, oversee regulatory compliance and spearhead the strategic planning for the Johns Hopkins Hospital Outpatient Center and other ambulatory locations, including the Rubenstein Building and the Moore Clinic. He will officially begin his duties on May 1, 2013.

Dr. Sisson joined The Johns Hopkins University's general internal medicine faculty in 1996, after completing his internship and residency in internal medicine, including a year as assistant chief of service at The Johns Hopkins Hospital. He earned his medical degree with election to Alpha Omega Alpha from the Tufts University School of Medicine and received his bachelor's degree in chemistry magna cum laude from Duke University. Dr. Sisson currently serves as the vice chair for clinical operations for the Johns Hopkins Hospital Department of Medicine.

During his 23 years at Johns Hopkins, Dr. Sisson has not only distinguished himself as a clinician, an educator and a researcher, but also as an innovator—particularly in ambulatory medicine. Earlier in his career, as associate residency program director in ambulatory education, he developed, implemented and expanded the Johns Hopkins Internet Learning Center, an educational platform that is now in use by almost 200 internal medicine residency training programs across the country. Additionally, he created and conducted resident ambulatory reports, establishing a forum for residents to discuss ambulatory patients and addressing the need to change the culture of training at Hopkins to be more inclusive of ambulatory care.

Subsequently, as vice chair of clinical operations for the Department of Medicine, Dr. Sisson collaborated with leadership to successfully implement the Sunrise electronic medical record—a huge departmental transformation that provided excellent groundwork for the current transition to Epic. He also played a major role in developing, implementing and providing analysis for the Department of Medicine Dashboard, an essential tool that is used to track inpatient flow and manage beds for the Department of Medicine. Consistent with his dedication to patient safety, he has chaired the Department of Medicine Safety Committee since 2009.

Most recently, Dr. Sisson was elected by his peers as governor of the Maryland Chapter of the American College of Physicians, the second-largest physician group in the United States, after being honored by the American College of Physicians' Maryland Chapter with the C. Lockard Conley Award for Outstanding Resident Education. His strong commitment to medical education and compassionate patient care were again recognized in 2011, when he was named to the Philip A. Tumulty Chair in the Department of Medicine.

With such an extensive background in ambulatory medicine, Dr. Sisson brings a wealth of talent and experience to his new position. We are confident that he is ideally qualified to provide outstanding executive leadership for our ambulatory operations as we enter a new era of challenges and opportunities in health care. Please join us in extending a warm congratulations to Dr. Sisson as he takes on the role of executive director of ambulatory services for The Johns Hopkins Hospital.

Sincerely,
