Two new JHU Gilman scholars Dear Faculty, Staff, and Students: We are pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Jeremy Nathans and Dr. Peter Pronovost as our newest Gilman Scholars, a distinction recognizing the very best of the best at The Johns Hopkins University. Dr. Nathans and Dr. Pronovost, both professors in the School of Medicine, join the inaugural group of 17 Gilman Scholars, named in March 2011. We thank all the Gilman Scholars, who identified and recommended to us an impressive slate of nominees. In particular, we are grateful to Dr. Michael Miller, who led the nomination process this year. The designation of Gilman Scholar honors colleagues who exemplify the highest ideals of The Johns Hopkins University, as demonstrated through distinguished research and scholarship, artistic and creative activity, teaching, mentoring, and/or service. The title is open to faculty members in the academic divisions and to professional staff at the Applied Physics Laboratory. The honor is, of course, named for Daniel Coit Gilman. Our university's visionary first president was the champion in this country of a then-revolutionary idea: that universities best advance humanity by pursuing simultaneously both great teaching and pathbreaking discovery. Among our Gilman Scholars are Nobel laureates, award-winning teachers, and world-renowned researchers and scholars. More details on this honor and brief summaries of the new scholars' accomplishments are available today on the Hub at http://hub.jhu.edu/2013/03/28/gilman-scholars-nathans-pronovost and will be published in the April issue of the Gazette. Please join us in congratulating Jeremy and Peter and celebrating each of our Gilman Scholars. Their presence at Johns Hopkins does us honor, and their brilliance, creativity, and dedication continue to inspire us. Sincerely, Ronald J. Daniels Jonathan A. Bagger
