Required Enrollment in the Emergency Alert System Dear Colleagues, Given the size and urban location of our East Baltimore medical campus, it's essential that we continually explore ways to ensure the safety and security of you, patients and the neighboring community. Critical to any emergency preparedness plan are immediate notice, timely communications and clear instructions. Through the Johns Hopkins Emergency Alert System we are able to provide you with information about emerging crises as soon as details become available. To ensure that you get the critical details, we are now requiring that all faculty, staff, trainees and students in the school of medicine, The Johns Hopkins Hospital and Health System Corporation, and Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center enroll in the Johns Hopkins Emergency Alert System (EAS). Thousands of our workforce members have already taken advantage of the EAS, which sends a text message to your cell phone or other mobile device with information when disaster strikes or danger is imminent, along with instructions on whether to evacuate or shelter in place. You may recall that we used the EAS to notify the campus of the 2010 shooter incident at The Johns Hopkins Hospital, as well as for the earthquake, tornado and hurricane warnings last year. Still, a significant percentage of our staff and students still have not signed up to receive these important alerts. Instituting mandatory enrollment in the Emergency Alert System will also ensure that we satisfy the federal Clery Act, which mandates that all colleges and universities notify their campus communities of an emergency situation.
You'll receive a test message within minutes, and then any emergency messages. Sincerely, Paul B. Rothman, M.D. Ronald R. Peterson Howard S. Gwon |
