Announcing the new president of Suburban Hospital:
Gene E. Green

Dear Colleagues,

We are pleased to inform you that the Suburban Hospital Board of Trustees has named Gene E. Green, M.D., as the next president of Suburban Hospital, effective February 1, 2013. He will succeed Brian Gragnolati, who will now transition full-time into his role of senior vice president for the Johns Hopkins Health System, where he oversees the Community Division.

From the time he joined Johns Hopkins Community Physicians (JHCP) in 2003, Gene has held various clinical and leadership positions. He has served as JHCP’s vice president of medical affairs and chief medical officer since 2009, overseeing the clinical operations of this 400-provider multispecialty group practice with 37 sites throughout Maryland and D.C.

When the search committee began its efforts to find a new president for Suburban Hospital, several attributes were identified as essential. In addition to having a strong background in quality and safety improvement and clinical program development, someone was needed who could advance partnerships with community-based physicians. In addition, we felt it would be beneficial to select someone who understands the Johns Hopkins system and has experience advocating at the system level, in order to facilitate and accelerate Suburban’s integration efforts with other parts of Johns Hopkins Medicine. After meeting with Gene several times and reviewing his significant accomplishments, we believe he is uniquely positioned to meet these needs.

Gene has spent his entire career working in community-based medicine and has proven to be a strong navigator of the challenges of that environment. He has significant experience building bridges between faculty and community-based physicians and has effectively worked with Suburban and our other community hospitals, both owned and affiliated, to improve access and quality. His work in JHCP has led to dramatic improvements in operating performance and increased patient, employee and physician satisfaction.

As the leader of our organizational efforts to deploy EPIC into the ambulatory care sites throughout our system, Gene has proven to be an effective relationship builder and communicator across the organization, working well with medical staff, senior management, clinical leaders, employees and, most importantly, patients.

Before entering medical school, Gene worked as a paramedic and a small business owner in the Tidewater area of Virginia. Gene earned his medical degree at Eastern Virginia Medical School, where he also completed a residency in family medicine and internal medicine. He later earned his master of business administration degree from The Johns Hopkins University.

Gene’s ability to gain medical staff support when developing, implementing and promoting projects, ventures and programs in a highly-matrixed environment will serve him well in this important position. Please join us in welcoming Gene to this exciting new role where his leadership and commitment will be an asset to both Suburban Hospital and Johns Hopkins Medicine.

Sincerely,

Paul B. Rothman, M.D.
