U.S. News & World Report Annual Hospital Rankings Dear Colleagues: Just one of the hospital’s many historic achievements is that it was consecutively ranked #1 in the nation for 21 years out of the 23 that U.S. News & World Report has held its annual rankings of U.S. hospitals. This year, the hospital is again ranked #1 nationally in five specialties, but due to changes in U.S. News’ methodology, it is ranked #2 in the nation. In the magazine’s inaugural ranking of hospitals within a state, the hospital ranked #1 in Maryland. It ranked #1 in the Baltimore metropolitan region, and it is the only hospital in the state to be ranked nationally in 16 medical specialties. Today, we are as proud as we have ever been of our impressive showing year after year, and we want to celebrate our strong standings in the national specialty rankings: Ear, Nose and Throat #1, Geriatrics #1, Neurology and Neurosurgery #1, Psychiatry #1, Rheumatology #1, Ophthalmology #2, Urology #2, Cancer #3, Cardiology and Heart Surgery #3, Gastroenterology #3, Diabetes and Endocrinology #4, Gynecology #4, Nephrology #4, Pulmonology #4, Orthopedics #5 and Rehabilitation #17. This achievement is made possible by you, the outstanding faculty, nurses, staff and physicians of The Johns Hopkins Hospital and Johns Hopkins Medicine. There is much to be proud of, and this year’s rankings give us one more opportunity to express thanks for all that you do for the patients and communities we serve. This gratitude does not stem from a single award, ranking or accolade; it stems from the innovation and dedication that you demonstrate and from the hope and compassion that you show our patients every single day. Independent evaluations such as the one conducted by U.S. News & World Report continue to serve as important reference points for the public, our patients, our community, referring physicians and insurers. As we move forward in an increasingly complex health care environment, we must challenge ourselves to raise the bar and lead—not just once a year, but every day of every year. One thing is certain: The qualities that made us #1 for 21 years are still what put us at the forefront of our field. In U.S. News & World Report’s 2012 state and regional rankings for hospitals providing services to adult patients, Johns Hopkins Medicine hospitals—including Howard County General Hospital, Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, Sibley Memorial Hospital and Suburban Hospital—were recognized as high performing in their metropolitan areas in a number of specialties. For a complete list of all rankings, please visit hopkinsmedicine.org/usnews or see the special edition of Dome this Thursday. All of the medical centers on the magazine’s national honor roll are superb. We are privileged to be in their company and will continue the work for which we have always been known: to advance medicine, to lead in research and to provide hope and healing to those we serve. Sincerely, Paul B. Rothman, M.D.
