Thomas (Ty) Crowe II appointed director of Pastoral Care

Dear Colleagues,

It is my pleasure to announce that Thomas (Ty) Crowe II has been selected to serve as the director of the Pastoral Care Department for The Johns Hopkins Hospital. For the past year, he has served with distinction as interim director during a national search process.

Since coming to Johns Hopkins in 2009 as manager of the Clinical Pastoral Education Program (CPE), Ty has proven himself to be a highly capable leader who is committed to providing outstanding spiritual care for our patients and their families—through the department’s ministry and through his dedication to the education of pastoral interns and residents.

In his role as manager, he developed curricula and educational opportunities for clinical pastoral education, launched a new Supervisory CPE Program, and created a pilot CPE program designed to support patient satisfaction initiatives. He teaches a Faith and Health class at the Johns Hopkins School of Nursing and participates as co-investigator in research projects related to chaplaincy and spirituality. With Ty’s dedication to Johns Hopkins’ mission of education, research and patient care, I am confident that he will continue Hopkins’ strong tradition of interfaith care and spiritual support.

Ty received his master of divinity from the University of Spiritual Healing and Sufism in Pope Valley, Calif., and completed his clinical pastoral education residency and supervisory training at Sutter Medical Center in Sacramento. Prior to his formal training, he traveled across the world to India and Nepal, discovering culture and faith in different contexts. Ty was ordained as a teacher in the Sufi tradition in 1998 and subsequently was the first Sufi to be certified as an Association for Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE) Supervisor in the history of the national ACPE organization. Without a doubt, he is sincerely committed to serving the needs of a patient population with diverse cultural and religious backgrounds.

Please join me in supporting Ty and in welcoming him to his new role.

Sincerely,

Redonda G. Miller, M.D., M.B.A.
Vice President, Medical Affairs
The Johns Hopkins Hospital
