Announcing the search process for a new president of Suburban Hospital Dear Colleagues, Our purpose in writing is to announce that Brian Gragnolati, president of Suburban Hospital and senior vice president of the Johns Hopkins Health System, will be stepping down later this year from his role at Suburban Hospital to focus full time on leading the Community Division of Johns Hopkins Medicine, of which Suburban Hospital is a member. This should not come as a surprise, as Brian’s efforts over the past 18 months have focused on developing and overseeing the newly created Community Division. In that capacity, he is leading the integration of the community hospitals into the system, working very closely with the Office of Physicians to address access issues and collaborating with the Offices of Research and Education to advance the academic mission into the community setting. In addition, he has been managing our affiliations with other community-based organizations and overseeing the expansion of ambulatory services through the state. Brian has been able to do all of this because of a very strong senior leadership team and board at Suburban. The reason we are making this change at this time relates to the need to elevate the pace and level of collaboration associated with integration as our industry faces one of the most challenging times in recent memory. Recently, the Suburban board met to discuss an approach to filling the president position. As you are aware from other recent senior leadership changes, specifically the JHM dean/CEO and the presidents at Sibley Memorial Hospital and All Children’s Hospital, the organization goes through a formal search process. Suburban will follow the same practice. A board-level search committee has been formed and will begin their work this month by first identifying the competencies desired for the next Suburban Hospital president and then developing a work plan with the goal of having someone in place by early fall. To assure continuity and focus, Brian will remain in his role until a new president is in place, and that individual will report to him once appointed. In addition, Suburban will continue to be guided by a very strong leadership team that has been working quite well together under the able leadership of Jacky Schultz in the role of executive vice president and chief operating officer. We will keep all of you updated as this process unfolds. Thank you for your continued support of our community and patients. Sincerely, Edward D. Miller, M.D.
