In Memoriam: Fray Francis Marshall Dear Colleagues, On behalf of Johns Hopkins Medicine, it is with great sadness that I announce the death of our former colleague, Fray Francis Marshall, M.D., Professor and Chairman of the Emory University Department of Urology. Fray died of cancer on Dec. 2 at the age of 67. An internationally renowned expert on urological diseases, Fray was named the first Bernard Schwartz Distinguished Professor of Urology and Oncology at Johns Hopkins, where he spent 23 years. He also served as the director of the Division of Adult Urology and chief of urology at Baltimore City Hospitals before moving to Emory 13 years ago. Over a 36-year career, Fray successfully treated thousands of patients with kidney, prostate and bladder cancer, as well as many other urological diseases. He was an innovator who in 1984 devised a surgical treatment for kidney cancer patients that is used around the world. Fray also developed the "mini laparoscopic prostatectomy,” a procedure that required a smaller incision and resulted in less pain and shorter recovery. Patrick Walsh, University Distinguished Professor of Urology notes that the James Buchanan Brady Urological Institute was very fortunate to have Fray Marshall, surgeon, scientist, and compassionate physician, on its faculty. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his honor may be made to the Marshall Make a Difference Fund, The Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta, 50 Hurt Plaza, Suite 449, Atlanta, GA 30303. I know that you join me in extending sincere condolences to Fray’s wife, Lindsay, and their children, Wheatley and Brooks. Sincerely, Edward D. Miller, M.D.
