Associate Dean for Research in the Capital Region - Dr. Theodore Abraham

Dear Colleagues,

The expansion of the Johns Hopkins Health System to include Howard County General Hospital, Suburban Hospital and Sibley Memorial Hospital provides a new opportunity to expand and coordinate translational research historically based primarily at Johns Hopkins Hospital and Bayview Medical Center. Theodore P. Abraham, M.D., associate professor of medicine and vice chief of the Division of Cardiology, has been appointed as the first Associate Dean for Research in the Capital Region.

As associate dean, Abraham’s primary responsibility will be to build research capacity at all three hospitals. He will assist the vice dean for clinical investigation to address regulatory support for research at these sites by leading their local research review committees and coordinating research training. He will work closely with departments, Johns Hopkins Clinical Research Network, Institute for Clinical and Translational Research, and the Community Division of Johns Hopkins Health System to both support investigators that are currently conducting research at these sites and support faculty investigators that may want to expand their research to these sites. In addition, he will coordinate all NIH Intramural research that takes place at Suburban Hospital. Coordination of the abundant strengths within Johns Hopkins Medicine with streamlined research operations in the National Capital Region is expected to bring new vigor to the overall clinical research mission of Johns Hopkins Medicine.

Abraham earned his medical degree from University of Bombay. He completed internal medicine residency at Wake Forest University, followed by a cardiovascular fellowship at University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas and an advanced fellowship in echocardiography and cardiac mechanics at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. He was on faculty at the Mayo Clinic before coming to Johns Hopkins University in 2004 as the associate director of the Johns Hopkins Echocardiography Laboratory. He also started and currently directs the Johns Hopkins Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Clinic. In 2009, he was appointed vice chief of the Division of Cardiology.

The Abraham research laboratory is involved in translational and clinical research related to hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and the use of novel cardiac mechanics imaging in various cardiac pathologies. Abraham currently serves on the national Board of Directors of the American Society of Echocardiography and on four editorial boards. He has published numerous research articles and book chapters, has mentored several postdoctoral fellows, and is the editor-in-chief of the Case-based Handbook of Echocardiography.
