Update from JHU Sustainability Office Dear Colleagues: Over the past few years, we have made significant progress toward "greening" The Johns Hopkins University. As part of this effort, the school of medicine has taken aggressive steps to reduce energy consumption. The resulting decrease in costs and greenhouse gas emissions is a real "win-win" for our school, the university, our community and the world. We took another step forward with President Daniels' announcement endorsing the implementation plan for advancing sustainability and climate stewardship, which commits the university to reducing the school's carbon footprint by more than half by 2025. Part of this plan is a "sustained campaign to encourage students, faculty and staff to reduce energy consumption at work and at home." By undertaking some simple measures in our workspaces, I believe we can make even greater progress. In support of this effort, the university's Sustainability Office has launched a green campus program that aims to engage building occupants in exploring opportunities to reduce energy and resource consumption at the departmental and individual levels. JHU sustainability coordinator Leana Houser will be setting up meetings with all of the academic and administrative offices to discuss the university's sustainability goals and how we can work together to successfully implement this effort. I know that I can count on your support. If you have any questions or comments about our conservation and efficiency program, please contact Leana Houser directly at lhouser@jhu.edu. Thank you for your participation. Edward D. Miller, M.D.
