I want to remind you that the new Johns Hopkins Medicine policy on interaction with industry takes effect today, July 1. This new policy limits interactions with pharmaceutical and medical device companies and applies to each of you: full-time and part-time faculty and staff, trainees, students and volunteers of all Hopkins Medicine member organizations.
As you know, many kinds of interactions between Johns Hopkins and industry are essential for converting the knowledge gained in our laboratories and clinics into treatments for patients. These industry relationships must be clearly defined and carefully managed to ensure objectivity, as well as to maintain the trust of patients and the public. The new policy on interaction with industry is designed to reorient the way we work with pharmaceutical and medical device industries to support independent decision-making and transparency.
The policy incorporates and strengthens some existing policies and sets forth new rules in several areas. It covers issues such as acceptance of gifts, food and meals, free pharmaceutical samples, and travel support, industry support for medical education, speaking engagements, industry representatives’ access to JHM sites, disclosure of industry relationships, and conflicts of interest with purchasing. Please be aware that a provision governing free pharmaceutical samples will take effect on July 1, 2010.
The policy, Fast Facts and FAQs are available online at http://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/Research/OPC/Policy_Industry_Interaction/. Questions about the policy should be directed to the Office of Policy Coordination at policy@jhmi.edu.
Thank you for supporting and complying with this important new policy.
Sincerely,
Edward D. Miller, M.D.
Dean of the Medical Faculty
CEO, Johns Hopkins Medicine
