Linda Robertson, vice president of government, community and public affairs for the university and vice president for government affairs and community relations at Johns Hopkins Medicine, has accepted an exciting opportunity to help shape the future of the nation’s economy.
On July 18, Linda will become assistant to the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System. In that role, she will be senior adviser to Chairman Ben S. Bernanke and the other governors of the Fed on strategic planning and day-to-day issues involving their interactions with the Congress.
This is an assignment for which Linda is extremely well-qualified. Before coming to Johns Hopkins, she had -- working in both government and private sector positions -- focused on federal legislative issues for more than 25 years. She has served in both the legislative and executive branches, including eight years at the Treasury Department, where she rose to assistant secretary for legislative and public liaison.
Linda has made transformative contributions to Johns Hopkins during her years here. Bringing together resources that had been scattered across the institutions, she put together a coordinated, highly effective government and community relations organization. With her team, she has created invaluable connections between our institutions, elected officials, and the communities we serve. She has been an ardent, eloquent advocate not only for public support of research universities and academic medical centers, but also particularly for recognition of the essential role these institutions play in society.
She also has been the prime mover in shaping important advances in the way we communicate with a wide range of audiences who care deeply about Johns Hopkins. And she has been a key adviser to the leadership of both the university and Johns Hopkins Medicine. We are deeply grateful for her service.
We will soon launch a search for Linda’s successor. Meanwhile, we have asked Tom Lewis, director of state affairs, to serve as interim vice president, effective July 18. Tom joined Johns Hopkins in 2005 after more than 17 years in Maryland state government, including 11 years as top aide to two speakers of the House of Delegates. He has earned enormous respect both inside and outside Johns Hopkins and will ably lead Government, Community and Public Affairs until a successor to Linda is named. We thank him for his willingness to take on this important assignment.
We know that everyone across the institutions joins us in thanking Linda Robertson for all that she has done for Johns Hopkins and in wishing her great success in her important new assignment.
Sincerely,
