I am excited to announce that Elias Zerhouni, M.D., who made invaluable contributions to science and biotechnology as a former school of medicine executive vice dean and director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) from 2002 to 2008, returns to Hopkins May 1 as a senior advisor to Johns Hopkins Medicine.
With a new administration in Washington, a global economic downturn, and anticipated reforms in health care finance and delivery, his depth of experience and wise counsel will help us take advantage of the many opportunities for innovation in academic medicine. After all, he knows Hopkins like few others.
After earning his medical degree from the University of Algiers, Elias came to Johns Hopkins to complete his residency in diagnostic radiology as chief resident. He later attained the rank of full professor of radiology and biomedical engineering, and in 1996 was named chairman of the Department of Radiology. He was instrumental in creating the Institute for Cell Engineering, where he focused much of his research on developing computed tomography and MRI methods to diagnose and treat cancer, as well as cardiovascular, pulmonary and other diseases.
During his tenure at Hopkins, Elias also assumed additional duties as vice dean for clinical affairs and president of the Clinical Practice Association, vice dean for research, and executive vice dean for the school of medicine until his nomination as the 15th director of the NIH by the president of the United States.
Please join me in welcoming Elias back home.
Sincerely,
Edward D. Miller, M.D.
Dean of the Medical Faculty
CEO, Johns Hopkins Medicine
