June 16, 2006 Dear Colleagues: It is with great sorrow that we note the passing of William J. McCarthy, Esq. Mr. McCarthy, one of the original founding trustees of The Johns Hopkins Health System, Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center and Johns Hopkins Medicine, and former trustee of The Johns Hopkins Hospital, passed away on June 16, 2006. Mr. McCarthy was elected to The Johns Hopkins Hospital board in 1983 and joined the Johns Hopkins Health System Corporation board in 1986 at its inception. In 1996, he was elected to the Johns Hopkins Medicine board, and became an emeritus trustee in 2001. As an active member of these boards he became a driving force for quality improvement in health care delivery. He also was elected to Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center board in 1984, serving as vice chairman from 1986 to 2000 and as chairman from 2000 to 2004. While chairman, he was honored with the establishment of the William J. McCarthy Distinguished Service Award to recognize individuals for extraordinary service to the Bayview Medical Center and who exemplify the best traditions of Johns Hopkins Medicine. At the time of his passing, Mr. McCarthy was an emeritus trustee for Johns Hopkins Medicine, The Johns Hopkins Hospital, and The Johns Hopkins Health System Corporation. We will always be greatly indebted to Mr. McCarthy for his long and distinguished service to Johns Hopkins and his many contributions to our institutions. Edward D. Miller, MD Ronald R. Peterson |
