September 27, 2005 Dear Colleagues: We are delighted to announce the appointment of Dana K. Andersen, M.D., as chief of surgical services at the Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, effective September 15, 2005. Dr. Andersen comes to the Department of Surgery and to Hopkins Bayview from the University of Massachusetts Medical School and UMass Memorial Health Care, where he was the Harry M. Haidak Distinguished Professor and chairman of the Department of Surgery. His appointment marks a return to Baltimore and to our Eastern Avenue campus for Dr. Andersen. He was here from 1974 to 1976 as a clinical associate in endocrinology and metabolism at the National Institute on Aging's Gerontology Research Center and was an assistant in medicine at our School of Medicine and a visiting physician at our Division of Gastroenterology during that time. Dr. Andersen completed his undergraduate and medical degrees at Duke University, where he also trained in general and thoracic surgery. His distinguished career in pancreatic and hepatobiliary surgery includes appointments at the State University of New York (SUNY) Health Sciences Center in Brooklyn, and at the University of Chicago and Yale, where he was professor and chief of general surgery. His research on gastrointestinal hormone physiology has been funded by the National Institutes of Health, where he was a member of the Surgery and Bioengineering Study Section. Dr. Andersen is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, a member of the American Surgical Association, past president of the Association for Academic Surgery and an officer or past officer of numerous medical and surgical societies, including the Society of University Surgeons, the American Association of Endocrine Surgeons and the Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract. Widely published, he is a reviewer for several scientific and clinical journals, an editorial board member for Contemporary Surgery, and an editor of Schwartz's Principles of Surgery. His clinical expertise, his experience in the management of operating rooms and general surgery services, coupled with his interests in research and academic medicine, should make him a valued member of the Hopkins team and an ideal leader for Hopkins Bayview. Please join us in welcoming Dr. Andersen to the Hopkins family. Sincerely, Julie Freischlag, M.D. Gregory F. Schaffer |
