March 25, 2005
I am happy to announce on behalf of myself and the Executive Committee
of
the Department of Medicine, the formation of a new division within the
Department of Medicine. This division will be called the Division of
Molecular Medicine. Its first director will be Andrew Feinberg, M.D.,
M.P.H., King Fahd Professor of Medicine, Molecular Biology & Genetics,
and
Oncology. Dr. Feinberg is the Principal Investigator of the NIH-funded
Center of Excellence in Genome Sciences (CEGS) in Epigenetics at Johns
Hopkins. Dr. Feinberg's work focuses on the mechanism of epigenetic
variation, i.e. non-sequence based information, and its relationship
to
human disease. His research group has had remarkable success in identifying
epigenetic mechanisms of human disease with much promise for the future,
and
they are involved in the teaching and clinical care of patients with
disorders of epigenetic etiology, such as Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome.
Many
members of the Department are aware of the remarkable work of Dr. Feinberg.
Dr. Feinberg graduated from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.
He
did postdoctoral research in developmental biology at UCSD and Johns
Hopkins
with Bert Vogelstein. He was also trained in Internal Medicine and Medical
Genetics, the latter with Victor McKusick. He developed as a faculty
member
at Hopkins and then at the University of Michigan where he was a Howard
Hughes Assistant and Associate Investigator. Dr. Feinberg gave up his
Howard Hughes position to come to Johns Hopkins and join the faculty
of the
Department of Medicine in 1994. He was appointed immediately to the
King
Fahd Chair and as Professor of Medicine.
Please join me in congratulating Dr. Feinberg on this appointment.
