March 12, 2004 Dear Colleagues: We are delighted to report that Jonathan S. Lewin, M.D., will be the new Martin W. Donner Professor and director of the Department of Radiology and radiologist-in-chief of The Johns Hopkins Hospital effective July 1, 2004. Dr. Lewin will join the Hopkins family from Case Western Reserve University and University Hospitals of Cleveland, where he served as the vice-chairman for research and academic affairs since 1997 and as director of magnetic resonance imaging since 1993. He received his AB degree in chemistry from Brown University and his doctor of medicine degree from Yale University Medical School. He completed an internship in pediatrics at Yale-New Haven Hospital, as well as a diagnostic radiology residency and fellowships in magnetic resonance research and neuroradiology. He is certified in radiology and neuroradiology by the American Board of Radiology. His professional career is equally impressive. After one year as director of head and neck imaging and neurologic computed tomography at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, Dr. Lewin began his full-time academic career. He was an assistant professor in radiology in the Department of Radiology at Case Western Reserve University from 1993 to 1997 and an associate professor of radiology and vice chairman for research and academic affairs in 1997. He was promoted to professor of radiology, general medical sciences (oncology) and neurological surgery in 2000 and appointed professor of biomedical engineering in 2002. Dr. Lewin also has a superb academic record, publishing more than 130 original articles and 35 book chapters and invited reviews. He is currently the principal investigator or co-principal investigator of several multimillion-dollar grants from the National Institutes of Health and two major industry grants. He has 18 patents related to magnetic resonance imaging applications. His strength and experience in departmental administration are reflected in his having served as director of magnetic resonance imaging, and on the operations committee, the executive committee, and the board of directors of the University Radiologists of Cleveland practice plan. He has served on 11 departmental, hospital, and medical school committees, including those on promotions and tenure, education and research, and president's advisory. He has also participated in several care path task forces. In making their recommendation, members of the Hopkins search committee headed by Brooks Jackson and Geraldine Seydoux, said of Dr. Lewin that his "past accomplishments and vision for the future for radiology indicate that he will serve as an excellent role model and leader for radiology for the next generation of academic radiologists." Please join us in welcoming Dr. Lewin to Hopkins and in thanking Bob Gayler for his superb performance as interim director of the Department of Radiology. Sincerely,
