November 1, 2002

Dear Colleagues:

We're fortunate in having a deep bench. Last spring, after President Bush appointed Elias Zerhouni as director of the NIH, Norm Beauchamp stepped in as interim director of the Department of Radiology. Norm now has received an offer he couldn't refuse and will become director of Radiology at the University of Washington in Seattle. I'm pleased to inform you that as of November 1, Bob Gayler will serve as interim director of Radiology for Johns Hopkins Medicine.

Few know Hopkins Radiology better than Bob. He came here as a resident in Diagnostic Radiology in 1964, joined our faculty in 1970, and since then has spent his entire professional career here. In addition to his clinical work, he has held a vast array of administrative positions, including servng as the department's deputy director, clinical director at the Outpatient Center and interim director at Howard County.

Bob is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Duke, received his M.D. degree and membership in Alpha Omega Alpha, the medical honorary society, at the University of Florida, and has been an active member of the American College of Radiology, Maryland Radiological Society, Radiation Control Advisory Board of Maryland, the Baltimore City Medical Society, and the Association of University Radiologists, among others.

While a search committee headed by Brooks Jackson and Geraldine Seydoux looks for a new permanent director, I'm sure I can count on you to offer all possible support to Bob.

Sincerely,

Edward D. Miller, M.D.
