August 20, 2002

Dear Student:

During the course of your education, you will be faced with an array of personal and professional challenges. These challenges may include life and career transitions, lifestyle adjustments, and adaptations to new systems and responsibilities. Each of you will approach these stresses from your own perspective, personal history, and coping style.

Students, like anyone else, experience personal problems. Difficulties in relationships, the increased independence and responsibility of entering medical and graduate school, the loss of loved ones, concerns about drugs or alcohol, legal or financial issues, and professional and career uncertainties in our competitive academic environment are just of some of the concerns you may face during your medical career.

In order to help you function at your highest level and with an enhanced sense of composure and mastery, the Student Assistance Program (SAP) was developed. The goals of this program are to enhance coping skills, decrease stress, and provide early outreach, intervention, referral and treatment.

The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine is committed to assisting students in developing these tools to deal with stress and other troubles when they arise. With goals of expanding your potential and easing transitions, the Student Assistance Program (SAP) provides support in dealing with the pressures and challenges you may face during your academic and professional career.

SAP services are private and confidential, in accordance with state law and University policies. All registered Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine students and their immediate family members are eligible for SAP services, and there is no cost for utilizing SAP services. For more information or to schedule an appointment, call 410/955-1220 or 443/997-3800.

The SAP is a new program for students this year. We hope you will read the additional information about the SAP, and that you will call for an appointment should the need arise.

Sincerely,

Edward D. Miller, MD
