Expectations for Core Faculty in Colleges Advisory Program

Core faculty will devote approximately 20 percent of their time to duties in the Colleges Program. These duties will include: serving as lead instructors for the Clinical Skills course, serving as core advisor to five students in each class (for a total of 20 students), and participating in college community events, meetings and academic committee work. Selected faculty should plan to commit to this Program for three to five years, with appointments renewable annually by mutual agreement with the Director.

Teaching Responsibilities for Clinical Skills for 2nd Year Students:

  • In Quarters I and II, faculty will serve as a small group instructor for 5 students (their designated advisees) for 1 afternoon per week on Monday or Wednesday, 2-5 p.m. (Faculty development will be offered for otherwise qualified faculty needing refresher training in teaching this course.)
  • In Quarter III, faculty will serve as a bedside instructor for 2 students for 1-2* afternoons per week on Monday, Wednesday, or Thursday from 2-5 p.m.
  • Participate in faculty development and committee activities listed below.

Student Advising Responsibilities for Medical Students by Class (beginning in fall 2005):

1st Year Students : Meet incoming students (including 5 advisees) at Orientation. Participate in White Coat Ceremony. Lead (and document) meetings with advisees on a monthly to quarterly basis.

2nd Year Students : Meet individually with advisees on quarterly schedule. These students will comprise the Quarters I/II Clinical Skills teaching group.

3rd Year Students : Five students will be assigned. Hold individual and group meetings with advisees 2-4x/year for academic and career counseling.

4th Year Students : Five students will be assigned. Individual and group meetings with advisees 2-4x/year for academic and career counseling. Graduation activities to be announced.

Community and Academic Responsibilities to Colleges System:

•  Participate in community celebrations (e.g. White Coat Ceremony, Commencement)
•  Participate in recruiting events (e.g. Revisit and Welcome Back Weekends)
•  Organize and attend college-wide functions 2x/year
•  Attend individual college meetings and aggregate colleges meeting monthly.
•  Participate on one of the Colleges' academic committees potentially including: student competency benchmarks; student/program evaluation; educational outcomes; curriculum development; community building; and personal/professional growth.
•  Lead and/or participate in faculty development programs potentially including: mentoring; communication skills; physical diagnosis; professionalism and humanism; new paradigms in care, e.g. relationship-centered care; small group facilitation; feedback; adult education methods.
•  Participate in annual performance reviews with college leader and director.

*Anticipated clinical skills assignment for Quarter III is 1afternoon per week and relies on recruitment of volunteer faculty to complete the teaching roster (in process). This issue will be clarified in August, 2005.
