Rachel Salas to Become Director for Interprofessional Education

Dear Colleagues,

We are pleased to announce that Rachel Marie Salas becomes the director for interprofessional education and interprofessional collaborative practice for the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine effective Sept. 1. Dr. Laura Hanyok, now the assistant dean for graduate medical education, previously held this role. Dr. Salas received her M.D. from the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, where she also completed a residency in neurology. She then came to Johns Hopkins for fellowship training in sleep medicine. In 2008, Dr. Salas joined the Johns Hopkins Department of Neurology and Neurosurgery, and in 2015 was promoted to associate professor. She has received medical education training through the Johns Hopkins School of Education in the unique interprofessional Master's of Education in the Health Professions program.

Since arriving at Johns Hopkins, Dr. Salas has distinguished herself as a medical educator in a number of roles, including director of the neurology clerkship. In July 2012, Dr. Salas created the Osler Apprenticeship in Neurology Program to allow medical student seniors the opportunities to engage in educational scholarship through research and begin to learn the skills of a medical teacher. She has developed educational tools to teach nurses, medical house staff members, and college, nurse practitioner and medical students. Dr. Salas holds a joint appointment in the Johns Hopkins School of Nursing, and she has served as a medical educator for nurse practitioners in the school of nursing since 2008.

Together with leaders in the school of nursing, Dr. Salas will spearhead efforts to advance interprofessional education and interprofessional collaborative practice. She will work closely with the associate deans for undergraduate and graduate medical education and the director of interprofessional education for the Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing. Dr. Salas will also collaborate with partners at other professional schools, including the Notre Dame of Maryland University School of Pharmacy, in developing and executing interprofessional education activities. Additionally, she will collaborate with the appropriate clinical units, residency programs, hospital and nursing leadership, directors of patient care services, and other clinical sites and directors to encourage development of interprofessional collaborative practice sites.

Please join us in congratulating Dr. Salas and welcoming her to this new role.

Sincerely,

Nancy A. Hueppchen, M.D. M.S.c.
