Parental Leave Policy To the school of medicine faculty, staff, post docs, medical students and graduate students Dear Colleagues: As you have read, President Daniels has announced new university-wide policies that provide paid parental leave and increased adoption assistance to faculty and staff and eight weeks of family leave accommodations for graduate students and postdoctoral trainees. If you have not seen the details you can read more here. A diverse and committed group of researchers, scholars, instructors, and staff members drive our division’s culture of excellence and the university’s standing as a world leader. We attract those individuals and support their best work when we help them balance academic work and personal commitments. As President Daniels said in his message, parenthood is one of life’s biggest changes, bringing joy and excitement and also new responsibilities. It is important that policies like these, and the working environment we create, enable the parents among us to care for their children while continuing to be a part of our vibrant academic community. I would also like to take a moment to thank the faculty senate of the school of medicine. Under the leadership of Masaro Ishii and Meredith McCormick, the senate was out in front in assessing both the need and options for a parental leave policy for the school of medicine, and indeed the policy implemented by the university is closely modeled on the recommendation of the faculty senate. Faculty and staff who need apply for family leave should contact Central Health Sciences HR at 410-955-6013. Graduate students and postdocs seeking accommodations for new children should work with their departmental or program administrators. Sincerely, Paul B. Rothman, M.D. |
