Mark Shaver to Step Down as Vice President of Business Development and Strategic Alliances for Johns Hopkins Medicine Dear Colleagues, We write to announce that Mark Shaver, Johns Hopkins Medicine's vice president of business development and strategic alliances, will leave Johns Hopkins to take on an exciting new role as senior vice president of strategy for Welltower, a real estate investment trust that invests in housing for seniors, assisted living, post-acute care facilities and medical office buildings. Mark has been a valued member of the Johns Hopkins Medicine community for almost two decades. He joined Johns Hopkins Medicine in 1999, spending the early part of his career working with Johns Hopkins Medical International (JHI). During his nine years with JHI, Mark cultivated and led key partnerships and business development activities with countries worldwide, including Japan, Mexico, Turkey, Canada, Panama, and Trinidad and Tobago. His caring stewardship of the merger and subsequent integration of All Children's Hospital and Johns Hopkins Medicine exemplified his commitment to supporting and sustaining our mission. He has consistently worked to broaden the scope of our system through the commercialization of health care delivery assets while protecting our mission and values. In his current role as vice president of business development and strategic alliances, Mark has continuously furthered our goal of becoming a model for an academically based, integrated health care delivery and finance system. Among his team's many achievements is the formation of a unique joint venture with Walgreens, the country's leading pharmacy retail chain. Mark's team also negotiated and launched key strategic collaborations with startup entities such as Protenus, miDiagnostics and Artifact Health, as well as with publically traded firms such as GE Healthcare, Cardinal Health, Premier, Apple, Welltower and Under Armour. Mark led the negotiations to merge Sleep Services of America into MedBridge Healthcare in 2016. Mark's last day with Hopkins will be Jan. 2, 2018. A search will be conducted to select his successor. Information regarding the transition of his responsibilities on an interim basis will be forthcoming. We are extremely grateful for the leadership Mark has provided to Johns Hopkins Medicine. We will miss not only that leadership but also his friendship and inspiring spirit. Please join us in thanking Mark for his extraordinary service and wishing him much success as he embarks on the next chapter of his career.Sincerely, Paul B. Rothman, M.D. Ronald R.
