Joy in Medicine Task Force Final Report

Dear Colleagues,

We are honored to have served over the past year as co-chairs of Dean Rothman's Joy in Medicine Task Force.

This task force was commissioned to:

  1. identify the main barriers to professional satisfaction among our researchers and core providers at Johns Hopkins Medicine;
  2. assess the degree of burnout among health care providers and researchers;
  3. develop strategies and recommendations to preserve and enhance the joy in medicine while reducing burnout;
  4. develop a white paper;
  5. recommend an implementation strategy.

You will find attached that white paper, "Joy in Medicine Report of the Dean's Task Force." This report represents the dedication and hard work of the task force, especially the five work groups over the last 11 months.

The first white paper recommendation, for establishment of a Wellness Office, will be carried out in the second half of FY18. Starting in FY19, a five-year plan will be developed to implement the task force's other action items.

We appreciate having been a part of the Joy in Medicine initiative and working with a superb task force. We are excited to see this initiative move forward in the near future.

Sincerely,

William A. Baumgartner, M.D.
The Vincent L. Gott Professor of Cardiac Surgery

Janice E. Clements, Ph.D.
