Jonathan Efron Appointed Senior Vice President of the Office of Johns Hopkins Physicians To the Johns Hopkins Medicine community Dear Colleagues, We are pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Jonathan Efron as senior vice president of the Johns Hopkins Medicine Office of Johns Hopkins Physicians (OJHP). His appointment will be effective Jan. 1, 2018. Dr. Efron will succeed Dr. William Baumgartner, who is retiring from the OJHP role, but will remain vice dean of clinical affairs for the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Dr. Efron is a highly regarded colorectal surgeon with a clinical focus in colon and rectal cancer and inflammatory bowel disease. He currently serves as chief of surgery for Johns Hopkins Community Physicians (JHCP) and executive vice director for the Department of Surgery, where he assists in overseeing the day-to-day operations and serving as a liaison between The Johns Hopkins Hospital and its affiliates. Dr. Efron has also served as the chief of the Ravitch Division of Gastrointestinal Surgery in the Department of Surgery since 2009 and was installed as The Mark M. Ravitch, M.D., Endowed Professor in Gastrointestinal Surgery in 2016. He served as interim director of surgery from 2013 to 2015. His extensive experience in developing health care delivery strategies and his research in improving surgical care will be a valuable asset in the OJHP's mission to advance new, innovative care models and coordinate the clinical activities of faculty, JHCP, and community and aligned physicians across Johns Hopkins Medicine. When Dr. Efron assumes the new position as senior vice president of OJHP, he will continue in his role as executive vice director for the Department of Surgery and step down as chief of surgery of the Ravitch Division of Gastrointestinal Surgery. He will also continue to see patients on a regular but more limited basis. As part of the Johns Hopkins Medicine Clinical Awards for Physicians and Care Teams, Dr. Efron was named 2016 Physician of the Year for The Johns Hopkins Hospital. He was recognized for his efforts in developing the skilled team of physicians, surgeons, nurse practitioners, physical therapists and nurses' aides in the colorectal surgery department's outpatient and inpatient units that provides our patients with quality care. Dr. Efron earned his medical degree from University of Maryland School of Medicine and completed a residency in general surgery at North Shore University Hospital and a fellowship in colorectal surgery at Cleveland Clinic Florida. Early in his career, he joined the faculty at Cleveland Clinic Florida and was an associate professor of surgery at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine in Arizona. He joined the Johns Hopkins faculty nine years ago. A frequent featured speaker, Dr. Efron has published more than 100 articles in peer-reviewed journals and authored 11 book chapters and over 104 abstracts. He was inducted into the Miller-Coulson Academy of Clinical Excellence and is a member of a number of professional organizations, including the American College of Surgeons, the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons, Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscope Surgeons and the American Surgical Association. He also serves on the World Journal of Surgery editorial board. We would again like to thank Dr. Baumgartner for leading the OJHP and for his integral role in ensuring streamlined clinical operations across our hospitals and outpatient locations. Dr. Efron is a respected leader with a commitment to excellence and a passion for engaging patients in their health care. He believes the best clinicians are those who obtain joy in treating patients. Please join us in congratulating him on this deserving appointment.Sincerely, Paul B. Rothman, M.D. Ronald R.
