Johns Hopkins Children's Center Ranks #5 on U.S. News & World Report Honor Roll

To The Johns Hopkins Hospital and School of Medicine community

Dear Colleagues,

Every day, the faculty and staff of Johns Hopkins Children's Center unwaveringly deliver the best, most compassionate care to our pediatric patients and their families. They don't do so for accolades, but when they are publicly acknowledged for their excellence, we applaud them as the world-class caregivers we know them to be. With that in mind, we are delighted that Johns Hopkins Children's Center ranked #5 on the U.S. News & World Report 2017–18 Best Children's Hospitals honor roll and is yet again the highest-ranked children's hospital in the state of Maryland. This is the first time that we've been on the honor roll since 2014, when we were ranked #10. We have much to celebrate.

We want to recognize seven of our pediatric specialties that are ranked among the top 10 in the nation—up from four last year—with two of them in the top five. Please join us in congratulating the following teams:

#4: Neonatology (up from #19 in 2016)
#5: Neurology & Neurosurgery (up from #7 in 2016)
#6: Cancer
#7: Urology (up from #11 in 2016)
#9: Gastroenterology & GI Surgery (up from #16 in 2016)
#10: Orthopedics
#10: Pulmonology
#11: Nephrology (up from #14 in 2016)
#12: Diabetes & Endocrinology (up from #15 in 2016)
#34: Cardiology & Heart Surgery

We offer our heartfelt appreciation to all the staff for their devotion, talent and work to improve the health and lives of so many people who come to us for care.

We also congratulate our esteemed peers at Boston Children's Hospital, which received the #1 ranking this year. All the hospitals in the top 10 exemplify pediatric medical excellence, and we are honored to be among such distinguished institutions. For a complete list of the 2017–18 Best Children's Hospitals, please visit the U.S. News & World Report website.

The methodology used by U.S. News to determine the Best Children's Hospitals changes annually and considers three main criteria: structure, which refers to hospital resources directly related to patient care; process, which encompasses overall interpretation of diagnosis, treatment, prevention and patient education; and outcomes, which includes survival as well as functional success and incidence of adverse events. You can also learn more on the Johns Hopkins Medicine intranet, in the special edition of Hopkins Insider and on the Children's Center website.

Our unparalleled care to children helps form the bedrock of Johns Hopkins' legacy of excellence. We know that because of our dedicated people, that legacy will continue well into the future.

Congratulations again to our Johns Hopkins Children's Center faculty and staff on this year's U.S. News ranking.

Sincerely,

Redonda G. Miller, M.D., M.B.A.
