John Grinnalds to Retire as Senior Director for Facilities Management

To the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine community

Dear Colleagues,

We write to you to share that John "Jack" Grinnalds, senior director for facilities management for the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, will retire on Feb. 3.

With an extensive background in engineering and architecture, Jack came to Johns Hopkins in 1988 as director of facilities planning and design. In 1992, he was named senior director for facilities management.

Throughout his time here, Jack has effectively led the planning, design, maintenance, operations and numerous support services for school of medicine facilities. This includes a portfolio of 23 buildings on multiple campuses and a total of 2.3 million square feet of space.

Over the past 25 years, Jack has overseen the planning, design, construction and occupancy of over 1.2 million square feet of new construction. In addition, Jack has been instrumental throughout his tenure in initiating and leading school's efforts in energy conservation and sustainability. We commend Jack for the outstanding work and extraordinary service he and his team of 260 staff members have provided for the school of medicine and Johns Hopkins Medicine.

We are pleased that Craig Goodwin has agreed to serve as the interim director for facilities management following Jack's retirement. Craig, a professional engineer, has been with Johns Hopkins for nearly 20 years, most recently as director of design and construction for the school of medicine. One of his key roles was managing construction of the four-story Anne and Mike Armstrong Medical Education Building and the 13-story David H. Koch Cancer Research Building.

We are grateful for Jack's leadership, expertise and commitment. Please join us in expressing appreciation to Jack for the innumerable contributions he has made to Johns Hopkins.

Thank you, Jack.

Sincerely,

Paul B. Rothman, M.D.
Dean of the Medical Faculty
CEO, Johns Hopkins Medicine

Landon S. King, M.D.
Executive Vice Dean
Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine
