Guidance from Corporate Security

To the East Baltimore campus community

Incidences of intolerant and insensitive behavior directed toward Johns Hopkins patients, visitors, faculty members, staff members and students have unfortunately increased. Corporate Security takes these situations very seriously. If you are confronted with or observe such behavior, we recommend the following steps.

  1. Remain calm.
  2. Do not engage the individual. Walk away to separate yourself.
  3. Move toward other people. There is safety in numbers.
  4. Note the location, time and any unique descriptors that will help Corporate Security locate the individual.
  5. Immediately report the incident to Corporate Security by calling one of our 24/7 communications centers:
    • Johns Hopkins East Baltimore medical campus – 410-955-5585
    • Johns Hopkins University Homewood campus – 410-516-4600
    • Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center campus – 410-550-0333
    • Call 911 if you are not on a Johns Hopkins campus.
  6. Be prepared to provide as much detailed information as possible to the responding officer(s).

Corporate Security is available to meet with faculty members, students and staff members in large or small groups. To schedule a meeting with a Corporate Security professional, please call 410-614-3473.

To help stay safe, follow these basic safety tips:

  • Always be aware of your surroundings.
  • When walking, whenever possible, walk in groups of two or more. There is safety in numbers.
  • Walk and park in areas that are well-lit.
  • Avoid using outdoor ATMs after dark.
  • Cross streets in designated crosswalks. At controlled intersections, cross with the signal and remember that while state law gives the right of way to pedestrians in the crosswalk, it is also your responsibility to make good decisions when entering the crosswalk.
  • Being aware of your surroundings also requires that you be able to hear what is going on around you. If you listen to you music while walking, jogging and/or biking, consider keeping one ear bud out so you can hear what is going on around you. Many times, you will hear what is going on before you see it.
  • Avoid using your cellphone when walking outside, but if you must, be sure to find a place where there are bystanders and stand where no one can come up behind you.
