Farewell to Ted Abraham Leaving as Associate Dean

Dear Colleagues,

Dr. Theodore Abraham, professor of medicine and radiology and radiological science, is transitioning to a new position at the University of California San Francisco School of Medicine. However, through his accomplishments, he will leave a lasting impact on Johns Hopkins Medicine. Ted was the first associate dean for research to promote and support research in the Johns Hopkins hospitals located in the national capital region. In 2011, he established the Office of Capital Region Research, better known as CAPRES. The scope of this office included promotion of research at Howard County General Hospital, Sibley Memorial Hospital and Suburban Hospital. With the support of Jackie Lobien, CAPRES divisional coordinator, Ted developed a program that supports over 50 researchers and 100 protocols, and employs a team of 22 full-time research coordinators across the three hospitals. His team also helped with the transition of the institutional review boards (IRBs) at the community hospitals to become effective research committees providing valuable insights on the local research environment. Ted was exceptionally effective combining the abundant strengths within the Johns Hopkins national capital region hospitals and the expertise in research found in our East Baltimore centers.

Ted came to Johns Hopkins Medicine from the Mayo Clinic in 2004. He founded the Johns Hopkins Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Center of Excellence, where he provided outstanding clinical care and partnered with patients on understanding the causes, outcomes and treatment for their condition. His research laboratory has been involved in translational and clinical research related to hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and the use of novel cardiac mechanics imaging in various cardiac pathologies. Ted previously served on the national board of directors for the American Society of Echocardiography and will be the 2018 abstract co-chair for the American Society of Echocardiography Scientific Sessions. He also sits on four editorial boards.

We owe our gratitude to Ted for his service to Johns Hopkins. We wish him and his family all the best in their move to the University of California San Francisco, where Ted will be the Meyer Friedman Distinguished Professor of Medicine and clinical chief of cardiology. He will also direct the UCSF Echocardiography Laboratory and co-direct the UCSF HCM Center of Excellence. Additionally, he will be the physician lead for UCSF Health, reporting both to the executive vice president for physician services at UCSF Health and vice dean for clinical affairs, and to the senior vice president for UCSF Health Affiliates. We will begin our search for the next leader of CAPRES promptly.

Best regards,

Daniel E. Ford, M.D., M.P.H.
Vice Dean for Clinical Investigation
Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine
