Carol Stansbury and Melissa Richardson Named to New Positions in the Department of Care Coordination and Clinical Resource Management

Carol joined Johns Hopkins in 1984 as a clinical social worker in the emergency department, where she successfully developed programs that expanded the role of social work in the ED. She quickly assumed more responsibilities and was promoted to senior social worker and assistant director of social work. Prior to assuming her new position, Carol served as the director of social work for The Johns Hopkins Hospital for the last 11 years. During this time, she made significant contributions to ensure that our patients received the highest quality care and service through the department's assessment and counseling expertise. Carol also chairs the Social Work Council, which oversees the hospital's social practice and develops strategies to meet the needs of our patient population. Carol earned her bachelor's degree from Salisbury State College and her master's degree in social work from the University of Maryland. She holds a licensed clinical social worker-clinical designation.

In her new positon as senior director for care coordination, Melissa Richardson leads the hospital's continuing efforts to transform patient care delivery, reduce readmissions, avoid preventable utilization and improve patient transitions. She will evaluate new patient care delivery strategies and develop operational plans for implementation. She also oversees the patient access line (PAL) postdischarge call service, and directs the activities of the department's professional development specialists (R.N.s) to deploy all aspects of care coordination throughout the institution. In addition, Melissa will closely collaborate with the leadership of Johns Hopkins Home Care Group, Johns Hopkins HealthCare and our other health system hospitals to coordinate and implement programs that cross institutions.

For the past 25 years, Melissa has worked in a variety of capacities throughout the health system and The Johns Hopkins Hospital, including serving as director of special projects, director of planning, and assistant vice president of planning and marketing for the Wyman Park Medical Center/Homewood Hospital Center. She held her most recent position, director of care coordination for the hospital, for six years, and was instrumental in development of the PAL postdischarge call program, the After-Care Clinic and the Phipps Behavioral Health program. She has also been an active participant in multiple enterprise initiatives, such as the Johns Hopkins Community Health Partnership, the Community Health Partnership of Baltimore, and the HSCRC jobs program. Melissa earned her bachelor's degree summa cum laude from Towson University and her master's degree from the Sellinger School of Business at Loyola College.

Please join us in congratulating Melissa and Carol on these well-deserved appointments. We look forward to their continued commitment to enhance care coordination and care management for The Johns Hopkins Hospital.

Sincerely,

Redonda G. Miller, M.D., M.B.A
