Allan Gelber to become Chair of the M.D. Admissions Committee To school of medicine faculty, staff and students Dear Colleagues, I am delighted to announce that Allan Gelber will become the new chair of the M.D. Admissions Committee, effective today, Aug. 1, 2017. Dr. Gelber is a professor of medicine in the Department of Medicine, Division of Rheumatology, with a joint appointment in the Department of Epidemiology in the Bloomberg School of Public Health. He is also an associate faculty member at the Welch Center for Prevention, Epidemiology and Clinical Research. Dr. Gelber received his B.A. in Economics from Tufts University before coming to Johns Hopkins to enter the M.D. program in 1984. After receiving both his M.P.H. and his M.D. from Johns Hopkins, Dr. Gelber entered residency training in internal medicine at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, NC. In 1992, Dr. Gelber returned to Johns Hopkins for fellowship training in the Division of Clinical and Molecular Rheumatology, and joined the faculty in 1994. In 1999, Dr. Gelber received his Ph.D. in clinical investigation from our School of Public Health. Dr. Gelber has been an extraordinary teacher and mentor to students in the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and to residents and fellows at The Johns Hopkins Hospital and Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center. After serving as co-director of the Rheumatology Fellowship Program for two years, he became director of the program in 2001, serving in that position until 2011. In 2009, he became an Aliki Scholar, one of a select group of faculty who serve as teachers and models of patient-centered care at Johns Hopkins Bayview. Dr. Gelber served as teaching attending for medical students and residents on the Thayer Firm on the Osler Medical Service at The Johns Hopkins Hospital from 2001 to 2006. He served as a Thayer Firm faculty member beginning in 2001, and, in 2014, became Thayer Firm faculty leader. Dr. Gelber has taught in multiple courses in the medical school curriculum, including Pathophysiology of Rheumatic Disease; Clinical Epidemiology; Principles of Immunology; Foundations of Public Health; Epidemiology and Ethics; and Clinical Skills. He has also taught medical students in the core clerkship in medicine, since 2003, and he is a member of the Medical Student Promotions Committee in the school of medicine. Dr. Gelber has served on the Internship Selection Committee in the internal medicine residency program at Johns Hopkins Bayview from 2007 to the present, and on the Internship Selection Committee in the Osler Medical Residency Program at The Johns Hopkins Hospital, from 1996 to 2006 and again from 2013 to the present. In 2008, Dr. Gelber received the Professors' Award for Excellence in Teaching in the Preclinical and Clinical Sciences. In 2016, he received the W. Barry Wood Excellence in Teaching Award, given annually by our medical students to recognize the most inspirational and effective teachers in the preclinical curriculum. In recognition of his scholarship, professionalism, leadership and gifted teaching, Dr. Gelber was inducted as a medical school alumnus into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society in 2011.
