2016 Reflection: United Around Our Mission and Values

To the Johns Hopkins Medicine Community

Dear Colleagues,

As we move into the holiday season and closer to a new year, this is a time for both reflection and resolve.

Over the past year, we have continued to shine in all three parts of our mission. Our research teams have made stunning discoveries in neuroscience, cancer immunology and numerous other disciplines. Our clinical teams improve the lives of our patients every day and are pioneering new approaches to preventing and treating disease. We continue to attract and train extraordinary individuals who will lead the next generation in medicine. Throughout Johns Hopkins Medicine, the daily efforts of members of our staff make all of this possible. We are so accustomed to such successes that it would be easy to take them for granted. But they are only possible because of the dedication, collaboration and creativity of all of you across our community. We thank you for that.

As we look back on 2016, we also must acknowledge the heightened tensions we have seen across the country. This atmosphere was intensified by the political campaigns and surrounding dialogue, which were marked by divisiveness and heated rhetoric. Some of that tension has carried over into our local communities, our classrooms and our homes. We hope that the Johns Hopkins spirit of collegiality and compassion can unite us all in the pursuit of our mission, regardless of our political leanings. And we will take this moment to reassert, in the strongest voice possible, that we are committed to promoting an environment in which all members of our community, as well as all patients and guests, are welcomed and supported throughout Johns Hopkins Medicine.

The election was a reminder that each of us acts according to our own value system and priorities. Nonetheless, there are certain values that we maintain to be universal at Johns Hopkins Medicine. We expect that all discourse be conducted with civility, and we will not tolerate discrimination or bigotry toward any individuals or groups, as that behavior is antithetical to our core values of respect, diversity and inclusion.

Together, we will deliver the promise of medicine. The great pride we take in being part of Johns Hopkins Medicine derives from more than just the outstanding caliber of our research, teaching and clinical care. It also stems from belonging to a community characterized by integrity, open-mindedness and dedication to serving others with compassion.

We are grateful for all that you do to help support the mission of Johns Hopkins Medicine and to improve the health and lives of others. We wish you and your loved ones a joyful holiday season.

Sincerely,

Paul B. Rothman, M.D.
Dean of the Medical Faculty
CEO, Johns Hopkins Medicine
